The Belgian M51 helmet, also known as the “steel pot,” is directly inspired by the legendary American M1 helmet from World War II. The M1 model was the standard US Army helmet from 1941 until the 1980s, becoming an iconic symbol of the era and adopted or copied by numerous countries after the war.
The M51 model first appeared in France in the early 1950s as a national version of the American M1, with slight modifications to the visor shape, retention system, and interior liner. Belgium, in turn, produced its own M51 variant, very similar to the French version but still based on the M1 design. These helmets were widely produced and used until the 1970s and are today valued for their historical significance and build quality.
Made from solid steel, with a canvas chin strap and steel hook, the M51 helmet retains the essential features of the M1, including a rolled edge and a removable, adjustable interior liner.
