Following Indonesia's declaration of independence on 17 August 1945, the red and white flag was officially adopted as the national flag and has since become a lasting symbol of the nation's independence, unity and resilience.
The design is also closely connected to the national flag of Poland, as both countries use the same two colours arranged in reverse order. Poland's flag displays a white band above a red band and was officially adopted in 1919 following the country's restoration of independence after World War I. The white and red colours have represented Poland for centuries, originating from the nation's historic coat of arms featuring the White Eagle on a red shield. Although the two flags share an identical design apart from the colour order, each has its own unique history and national significance.
