The chequered flag has become one of the most recognisable symbols in motorsport, although its precise origins remain uncertain. One of the earliest documented uses is associated with early 20th-century motorsport, with a 1906 photograph from the Vanderbilt Cup showing a chequered flag being used at the finish.
The flag subsequently became firmly established as a finishing signal in motor racing. Historical racing records show chequered flags being used to signal the completion of a competitor's required distance, while the black and white pattern provided a highly visible signal that could be recognised by drivers and spectators. The symbolism has remained remarkably consistent as motorsport has developed from early road and track races into modern international competition.
Today, the black and white chequered flag continues to be used at the finish of motor races. Motorsport Australia's current flag-signalling regulations specify that the black and white chequered flag is waved at the finish line to signify the end of a practice session or race.
