The Australian National Flag was first flown on 3 September 1901, following a nationwide design competition held after Federation. Its design combines the Union Jack, representing Australia's historical ties to Britain, the Commonwealth Star, symbolising the unity of Australia's six states and territories, and the Southern Cross, a constellation visible from the southern hemisphere that reflects Australia's geographic location. In 1908, the Commonwealth Star gained its seventh point to represent the territories, and the Flags Act 1953 formally proclaimed the Blue Ensign as Australia's official National Flag.
