The COMMANDO Angle Head Torch is a traditional right-angle torch based on the distinctive military-style design that has been used by armed forces for generations. Its 90-degree head allows the torch to be clipped to clothing or equipment while directing the beam forwards, leaving both hands available for other tasks. It can also stand on its base and direct light where required, making it useful around camp, in the workshop, garage or vehicle.
The torch uses two D-cell batteries and features a simple slide on/off switch with a separate flash button. A metal side clip provides a convenient way to attach the torch to clothing, bags or belts. The screw cap incorporates storage for coloured filters, including red, yellow, blue and diffused white, giving the torch additional options for different lighting requirements.
A Brief History of the Angle-Head Torch
The 90-degree or "crookneck" torch has a long military history. The United States Army adopted the TL-122 series of right-angle torches around the beginning of the Second World War. The design allowed a soldier to carry the torch on their web equipment while directing the light forward, providing illumination without having to continuously hold the torch.
The design evolved through several versions during the Second World War, including the TL-122A through TL-122D. Later versions incorporated features such as coloured filters, spare-bulb storage and signalling capability. The basic concept continued into the post-war period and developed into the MX-99/U and MX-991/U torches associated particularly with the Vietnam era.
The Australian War Memorial holds examples of these right-angle military torches, including a Vietnam-era example recovered from an M113A1 armoured vehicle. Another Australian military example is described as an olive-green right-angle torch with coloured lenses, a protected switch and equipment clip.
The distinctive configuration has remained recognisable for more than 80 years, demonstrating how useful the basic right-angle concept has proved for hands-free illumination.
