The Helle Viking is a traditional Norwegian utility knife that revisits a classic Helle design with a distinctive historical connection. Designed by Arne Emil Christensen in 2009, the Viking was produced as a revision of a Helle classic associated with a fundraising voyage by a Viking longship. Its substantial 3.7 mm triple laminated carbon steel blade has a darkened finish retained from the heat treatment, giving the knife a deliberately rustic appearance. The subtly shaped curly birch handle provides comfortable control in several grip positions, while the peened tang and diamond-shaped washer contribute to its traditional construction.

About the Triple Laminated Carbon Steel
The Viking uses Helle's triple laminated carbon steel construction. Unlike Helle's stainless laminated blades, this construction uses carbon steel and is deliberately finished to retain the dark surface produced during heat treatment. Helle's manufacturer catalogue describes the Viking's blade as thick and made from laminated carbon steel, with the dark heat-treatment finish left on the sides for its rustic appearance. Carbon steel can provide excellent edge performance and is well suited to traditional knife-making, but it requires more care than stainless steel to minimise corrosion. Keeping the blade clean and dry and applying an appropriate protective oil when required is particularly important with a carbon steel knife.
The Helle Viking combines traditional Norwegian knife construction with a distinctive historical character. Its substantial laminated carbon steel blade, curly birch handle and genuine leather sheath make it a practical classic utility knife for outdoor users, collectors and enthusiasts of traditional Scandinavian knife-making.
