About the Steel
The Fjellkniven uses Helle's triple laminated stainless steel construction. Helle's proprietary stainless laminate is known as H3LS (Helle Triple Laminate Stainless) and combines different steel characteristics within the blade. Helle describes H3LS as having a highly stainless, flexible outer layer made from 304 steel surrounding a high-carbon core developed from Helle's family recipe. The outer layer provides high corrosion resistance and flexibility, while the harder core is designed to take a very sharp edge and offer high toughness. Helle specifies a hardness of 58–60 HRC for H3LS. The laminated construction allows Helle to combine the edge characteristics of a harder core with the durability and corrosion resistance of the outer steel layers.
The Fjellkniven remains a straightforward expression of Helle's traditional Norwegian knife-making approach. Its polished laminated stainless steel blade, curly birch handle and leather pouch sheath make it a practical belt knife for general outdoor use, while its 1994 design gives it a distinctive place within Helle's classic knife range.
