The South Korean flag, known as the Taegeukgi, is rich in symbolism. The white background represents peace and purity, while the red and blue taegeuk at the centre symbolises the balance of opposing forces in harmony. The four black trigrams positioned in each corner are derived from the ancient Chinese text I Ching and represent heaven, earth, water and fire. Although versions of the flag first appeared in the late 19th century, the current design was officially adopted by the Republic of Korea in 1948, where it has since become a proud symbol of the nation's identity and resilience.
