The M548 has a documented history as U.S. military ammunition packaging. U.S. Department of Defense documentation identifies MIL-S-23389 as the specification for the Shipping and Storage Container, Cartridge, 20MM, M548. The specification covers a steel container intended for the shipping and storage of 20 mm ammunition.
The origins of the M548 design date to the early Cold War period. A U.S. Army engineering drawing for the Shipping and Storage Container, M548 is dated 25 November 1959, demonstrating that the design was established during the early era of U.S. military adoption of 20 mm rotary cannon systems. The container was subsequently incorporated into U.S. military ammunition packaging specifications.
The M548 is associated with 20 mm ammunition, including ammunition used with the M61 Vulcan. The M61 is a six-barrel 20 mm rotary cannon developed by General Electric that entered U.S. military service in 1959. The cannon became widely associated with U.S. military aircraft and other weapons platforms, making purpose-built ammunition storage an important part of its logistics system.
Today, the M548 is valued both as genuine military surplus and as a substantial reusable storage container.
