Helle's triple laminated carbon steel construction. Unlike Helle's stainless laminated blades, this construction uses carbon steel and is deliberately finished to retain the dark surface produced during heat treatment. Helle's manufacturer catalogue describes the Viking's blade as thick and made from laminated carbon steel, with the dark heat-treatment finish left on the sides for its rustic appearance. Carbon steel can provide excellent edge performance and is well suited to traditional knife-making, but it requires more care than stainless steel to minimise corrosion.
