Apollo 11 Mission Patch History
The original Apollo 11 mission insignia was created for the historic 1969 mission that achieved the first crewed landing on the Moon. Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were involved in developing the emblem. Rather than featuring their individual names, the crew chose a design intended to represent the wider Apollo programme team and everyone who contributed to the mission.
The central image shows an American eagle descending towards the lunar surface with an olive branch in its talons. The eagle represented the United States, while the olive branch symbolised the crew's intention to come in peace for all mankind. Earth appears above the lunar landscape, representing the astronauts' home, while the surrounding black field represents the vastness of space.
Apollo 11 launched on 16 July 1969 with Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins aboard. On 20 July, Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the Moon in the Lunar Module Eagle, while Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia. The mission fulfilled the goal established by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 of landing astronauts on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth.
